Barca-Velha is the epitome, the first, an unquestionable symbol of the highest quality of Douro wines. Classic, intense, complex, elegant, and rich, few adjectives suffice to describe what has been, since its creation in 1952, the most celebrated Portuguese wine. Barca-Velha is the foundation upon which the reputation of Casa Ferreirinha was built, the brand with the highest tradition of quality in the Douro and one of the main global references. VITICULTURAL YEAR: The winter was cold and very rainy, contributing to the replenishment of water reserves in the soil. From late spring to early autumn, the weather was dry, with two important exceptions on August 21st and September 1st, totaling between 35 and 40 mm throughout the region. The mild summer and the availability of water in the soil allowed for a very balanced grape ripening.
VINIFICATION: It is vinified in the cellar of Quinta da Leda, using selected grapes from this estate, which predominate, and from high-altitude areas in the Douro Superior. After destemming and gentle crushing, the grapes are sent to stainless steel tanks, where alcoholic fermentation takes place. This is followed by a long and gentle maceration, with controlled temperature, aiming to extract compounds that contribute to the color, aroma, flavor, and longevity of Barca-Velha.
MATURATION: Maturation in French oak barrels for a period of about 18 months. The final blend is made based on the careful selection of the best wines, resulting from numerous tastings and analyses of different batches and barrels over this period. In this selection lies the “secret” of Barca-Velha. To preserve the highest quality, it undergoes only one filtration before bottling.
AGING: Despite being ready to consume, it has a long aging potential and evolves positively in the bottle, which should be stored lying down. The peak, perhaps 15-20 years after harvest, although it is expected to remain vibrant for an as yet undetermined period.
SERVING: It should be placed vertically the day before and opened 2 to 3 hours before serving. With so many years in the bottle, the wine should be carefully decanted to separate its natural sediment. Ideally, it should be served at a temperature of 16ºC-18ºC.
